But the money is secondary to the network. As a Chevening Scholar, you are invited to exclusive networking events at the FCDO, cultural tours across the UK, and private receptions with diplomats and industry leaders. The core of the application consists of four essays: Leadership & Influence, Networking, Studying in the UK, and Career Plan. You do not need university admission to apply initially. However, you must list three eligible UK Master's courses in your application.

If your essays pass the intense initial screening by independent reading committees, you will be invited for an interview at the British Embassy or High Commission in your home country between February and April. By July, if you are conditionally selected, you MUST have received an unconditional offer from at least one of your three chosen university courses to secure the scholarship.

The 'Career Plan' is where most fail: it must be a highly specific, realistic roadmap (1-year, 3-year, 5-year goals) showing exactly how returning to your home country with a UK degree will solve a specific problem in your sector. During the embassy interview, the panel will grill you on your essays.

You must speak confidently about your vision and demonstrate that you are a culturally adaptable, charismatic ambassador for your country. Choose your three university courses strategically. Do not just pick Oxford, Cambridge, and LSE because of their names; pick courses that align perfectly with your career plan, and perhaps include a slightly less competitive regional university to guarantee you get that crucial unconditional offer.

Chevening has a strict two-year home return policy. You MUST leave the UK and return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years immediately after your scholarship ends. You cannot transition into a UK post-study work visa.
