Why You Should Apply

ETH Zurich is a titan in science, engineering, and mathematics, producing over 20 Nobel Laureates (including Albert Einstein). Studying here provides access to unparalleled research facilities, immense funding networks, and direct recruitment pipelines to the world's most innovative tech and engineering firms. The ESOP is designed to ensure that the brightest minds in the world can study at ETH without financial barriers.

It provides a full tuition fee waiver (though ETH tuition is historically very low, around 730 CHF per semester) and a massive living stipend of 12,000 CHF per semester. This breaks down to 2,000 CHF per month, which is a highly competitive student income in Zurich, allowing you to cover housing, food, and transport without needing a part-time job. Beyond the money, being an ESOP scholar at ETH places you in an elite cohort.

You gain access to exclusive mentorship, networking events organized by the ETH Foundation, and you are heavily tracked by industry partners and ETH research labs for future PhD or employment opportunities. If you are a top-tier STEM student, this is one of the highest-value Master's scholarships on the planet.

Application Process

The application process is fully integrated into the ETH Master's admission portal (eApply). The window is incredibly short, strictly running from November 1st to November 30th for the intake in the following autumn. You apply for the Master's program and the ESOP simultaneously.

The core eligibility requirement is brutal: you must be among the top 10% of your Bachelor's degree program. The application requires your standard admission documents (transcripts, CV, language certificates) plus two specific ESOP requirements: a pre-proposal for your Master's thesis and a motivation letter. The Master's thesis pre-proposal is a unique hurdle.

Even though you are just starting your Master's, ETH wants you to pitch a highly innovative, deeply researched concept for your final project. If your written application makes it past the initial faculty screening, you will likely be invited for a virtual interview in February, where ETH professors will rigorously test your academic depth and the viability of your pre-proposal.

How to Win This Scholarship

You cannot game the ESOP; you simply have to be brilliant. Your grades must be flawless (top 10% is the absolute minimum baseline, but successful candidates are often top 1-2%). The Master's thesis pre-proposal is where you win the scholarship.

It cannot be generic. You must research the specific labs and professors at ETH within your target department, identify the cutting edge of their current research, and propose a project that pushes that boundary further. Your proposal must demonstrate deep theoretical knowledge, a realistic methodology, and extreme ambition.

During the interview, do not expect friendly chat; expect a highly technical, rigorous academic defense of your proposal. You must know your subject inside and out. Ensure your recommendation letters are from professors who can specifically attest to your research capabilities and rank you against your peers.

Apply as early as possible in November to ensure your documents are verified in time.

Benefits After Completing Study

Graduating with an MSc from ETH Zurich with the ESOP distinction makes you an incredibly hot commodity. Many ESOP scholars transition directly into fully funded PhD positions at ETH or other global top-10 universities. For those entering industry, the Swiss tech and finance sectors (Google, UBS, ABB, Novartis) actively recruit ETH graduates.

Non-EU graduates receive a six-month job search visa, and the starting salaries for ETH graduates in Switzerland are among the highest in Europe.

The ESOP is awarded for the regular duration of the Master's program (usually 3 or 4 semesters depending on the specific curriculum). The 12,000 CHF per semester is disbursed directly to your account. It is crucial to note that while the stipend is generous, Zurich is exceptionally expensive; securing student housing early through the university is vital to making the stipend stretch.

The scholarship requires you to maintain good academic standing. If you choose to do an exchange semester abroad during your Master's, ETH may suspend the ESOP funding for that semester, so you must plan your curriculum carefully. You are not eligible if you already hold a Master's degree or are already enrolled at ETH Zurich.

The ESOP does not cover the initial 150 CHF application fee for the university.
