The 'Beca Colombia' program is the Colombian government's primary tool for international academic mobility. Why You Should Apply
Colombia is an incredibly vibrant, rapidly developing academic destination with top-ranked universities in Latin America. The Beca Colombia is a complete financial shield. It forces the host university to cover 100% of your tuition costs.
ICETEX then provides a living stipend equivalent to three current legal monthly minimum wages (roughly 2.6 to 3.9 million COP, though exact minimums fluctuate annually). In Colombia, earning over 2.6 million COP per month places you comfortably in the middle class, allowing you to rent a very nice apartment, eat out, and travel domestically. The scholarship also provides a one-time installation grant to help you settle in and covers your health insurance within Colombia.
For students from non-Spanish-speaking countries, the program often includes up to six months of fully funded Spanish language training before your academic program begins.
Application Process
First, you must check the 'Catálogo de Oferta Académica' (Academic Offer Catalog) published by ICETEX for the current call. This spreadsheet lists all the specific Master's, PhDs, and Specializations at participating universities that are eligible for funding. You must apply and gain unconditional admission to at least one (and up to three) of these programs.
Once you have your admission letter, you submit your application through the ICETEX online portal, uploading your transcripts, health certificate, and essays.
How to Win This Scholarship
The baseline requirement is a strong undergraduate GPA—you must have the equivalent of a 4.0 out of 5.0 on the Colombian scale. The selection committee evaluates your academic trajectory, your professional experience, and reciprocity. You must clearly articulate why studying in Colombia is necessary for your career and how you will act as an ambassador bridging Colombia and your home nation.
The scholarship heavily favors applicants under the age of 50. Ensure all your documents are perfectly translated and apostilled; Latin American bureaucracies will reject applications for minor technical errors.
Benefits After Completing Study
Graduating from a top Colombian university connects you deeply with the Andean region's professional network. Returning home with fluent Spanish and a postgraduate degree makes you highly competitive in international trade, diplomacy, and academia.
The scholarship does NOT cover your international flights. You must buy your own ticket to Bogotá (or your host city). You cannot apply if you are currently residing in Colombia or have lived there in the six months prior to the application.
If you have dual citizenship that includes Colombia, you are instantly disqualified. Spouses or dependents are absolutely not funded or supported in the visa process. You must be prepared to process your 'V' (Visitor) Courtesy Visa independently, though the scholarship status waives the visa issuance fees.
