Why You Should Apply

You need to understand exactly what the NSP is before applying: it is a mobility scholarship, not a full-degree scholarship. It will not fund an entire two-year Master's degree. Instead, it funds a 1 to 2 semester stay (or 1 to 10 months for researchers) at a Slovak university.

This makes it an incredible opportunity for students currently enrolled in a degree in their home country who want to do a semester abroad in Europe, conduct research for their thesis, or gain international lab experience. The financial package is exceptional for the region. Master's level students receive 620 euros per month, while PhD students receive 1,025.50 euros per month.

Because Slovakia is remarkably affordable—a spot in a student dorm costs less than 100 euros, and general living expenses in Bratislava or Kosice are low—this stipend allows you to live very comfortably and travel extensively throughout Central Europe. Slovakia is located in the very heart of Europe, bordering Austria, Czechia, Poland, Hungary, and Ukraine. You can literally take a one-hour bus from Bratislava to Vienna.

Slovak technical universities, such as the Slovak University of Technology in Bratislava and the Technical University of Kosice, have excellent facilities, particularly in automotive engineering, materials science, and IT, reflecting Slovakia's status as the world's largest per-capita car manufacturer. If you want a fully funded European academic adventure to enhance your current degree, the NSP is one of the easiest and most generous ways to get it.

Application Process

The NSP operates two calls per year: one with an April 30 deadline (for stays during the upcoming academic year) and one with an October 31 deadline (for stays during the summer semester). The application is fully online via scholarships.sk. The absolute most critical requirement is that you must secure an Admission/Invitation Letter from a Slovak public, private, or state higher education institution or research organization before applying.

You cannot apply blind. You must contact a Slovak university, propose your study or research plan, and get them to officially invite you. The application requires your CV, a detailed motivation letter, a study or research program detailing exactly what you will do in Slovakia, two recommendation letters from your home university professors, your academic transcripts, and the official invitation letter.

The selection committee evaluates the quality of your proposed study/research plan, your academic record, and how your stay will benefit both you and the Slovak host institution.

How to Win This Scholarship

The Invitation Letter and your Study/Research Plan are the two pillars of a successful NSP application. Do not send generic mass emails to Slovak universities asking for an invitation. Find a specific department or professor whose work aligns with your current studies.

Write a targeted email explaining who you are, what specific research or coursework you want to undertake at their institution under the NSP, and ask if they would be willing to host you. Slovak professors are generally very receptive to NSP applicants because you bring your own government funding and add international prestige to their department without costing them money. Your Study/Research Plan must be highly specific.

Explain exactly which courses you will take, which labs you will use, what data you will collect for your thesis, and a timeline for your stay. Vague plans to 'learn about Slovak culture' will be rejected. A well-justified academic rationale, backed by an enthusiastic invitation letter from a Slovak academic, guarantees a very high chance of success.

Benefits After Completing Study

While the NSP is a short-term mobility grant, the benefits are permanent. Having a European mobility period on your CV demonstrates adaptability, international experience, and cross-cultural communication skills to future employers. The academic connections you make with Slovak professors often lead to future collaborations, joint publications, or offers to return for full PhD or post-doc positions.

Experiencing the Central European academic and industrial environment provides insights into one of the most heavily industrialized and export-driven regions in the EU.

The NSP is funded by the Ministry of Education and administered by SAIA (Slovak Academic Information Agency). The scholarship does not cover tuition fees. However, because you are applying as a mobility/exchange student or visiting researcher, Slovak universities generally do not charge tuition fees for NSP scholars, though you must verify this with your host institution when securing the invitation.

Travel allowances are occasionally available for students coming from countries very distant from Slovakia, but this depends on budget availability and specific call rules. Health insurance is your responsibility and must be purchased before or immediately upon arrival for visa purposes. The stipend is paid locally in Slovakia, so you will need to open a local bank account upon arrival.

For students from Official Development Assistance (ODA) countries looking for full-degree funding, Slovakia runs a separate 'Government Scholarships of the Slovak Republic' program, which has entirely different rules, deadlines, and a much narrower list of eligible countries.
