Various U.S. Colleges and Universities (University)  ·  Updated June 13, 2026

The #YouAreWelcomeHere Scholarship was born out of a national marketing campaign by U.S. higher education institutions to combat the perception that the U.S. was becoming hostile to international students.

It is a decentralized scholarship program where participating U.S. colleges and universities commit to offering at least two massive tuition scholarships to international undergraduate applicants.

Why You Should Apply

U.S. undergraduate tuition is famously exorbitant, frequently exceeding $40,000 to $60,000 per year just for classes. While elite Ivy League schools offer need-based aid, the vast majority of mid-tier public and private U.S.

universities offer very little funding to international students. The #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship guarantees a minimum 50% tuition reduction at participating institutions, and it is renewable for all four years of your Bachelor's degree. Some universities even choose to cover 100% of tuition.

This drastically lowers the financial barrier to a U.S. degree. Furthermore, because it focuses on 'intercultural learning,' it is an excellent opportunity for highly outgoing, charismatic students who might not have perfect SAT scores but possess strong leadership and bridge-building skills.

Application Process

Because there is no central administration, your application strategy must be targeted. You must visit the official #YouAreWelcomeHere website to view the list of participating universities for the current intake. You first apply for standard undergraduate admission to a participating university.

Then, you submit a separate #YouAreWelcomeHere scholarship application directly to that university by their specific deadline (often stretching from December to March). The core requirement is either a 500-1,000 word essay or a 2-5 minute video answering a prompt about your leadership skills and how you plan to advance intercultural learning on their campus.

How to Win This Scholarship

The selection committees for this scholarship are looking for campus ambassadors. They want students who will join international clubs, host cultural exchange events, and actively break down barriers between international and domestic students. Your essay or video is the entire battle.

Do not just list your high school grades. Tell a specific story about a time you resolved a cultural conflict, organized a diverse group of people, or challenged stereotypes in your hometown. If you choose the video option, production value doesn't matter, but your energy and charisma do.

Speak directly to the camera, be highly enthusiastic, and explicitly mention specific clubs or initiatives you want to start at that specific university.

Benefits After Completing Study

Graduating from a U.S. institution grants you access to Optional Practical Training (OPT), allowing you to work in the U.S. for 1-3 years post-graduation.

Furthermore, students who win this scholarship are often heavily featured in university marketing and leadership circles, building strong networks with university administration that can lead to excellent letters of recommendation and on-campus employment opportunities.

This is strictly a tuition scholarship. It does NOT cover room, board, health insurance, or flights. Even with a 50% tuition waiver, you must prove to the U.S.

government that you have the remaining funds (often $20,000+ per year) to cover your living costs to secure your F-1 student visa. It is exclusively for first-year international undergraduate applicants; transfer students and graduate students are not eligible. You must maintain a satisfactory GPA to renew the scholarship each year.

Because each university only offers about two of these scholarships annually, the competition at popular universities can be intense.
