## Statement of Intent – University of Blantyre Synod

The Faculty of Theology at the University of Blantyre has been established in 1897 as an institution dedicated to theological education, research and service within Malawi. The university’s mission centers on nurturing a vibrant scholar community committed to intellectual growth and societal advancement, integrating practical application with rigorous academic study across various disciplines including theology, classics and history. It is rooted in the Christian faith and provides a strong foundation for leadership development and social change among Malawians.

The University of Blantyre’s current student body comprises approximately 2,000 students enrolled across numerous programs from undergraduate to postgraduate levels. The university has seen growth over the years with its focus expanding into areas like sustainable agriculture, environmental science and digital literacy training for rural communities. Notably, our institution holds a prominent position in Malawi contributing to community development through educational outreach initiatives. The university’s teaching environment is characterized by an emphasis on experiential learning. A core commitment lies in fostering critical thinking and ethical decision-making among its students.
